DESIGN EVOLUTION
It is clear that there is already a precedent for tall buildings and purpose built student accommodation locally.
Unite Students and its design team met with Southampton City Council officers in a series of pre-application meetings to discuss options and ideas for the redevelopment of the site.
Southampton City Council raised the importance of a tower element being a landmark feature, particularly when viewed from the approach to the City over the Itchen Bridge. Other wider views were also considered.
A taller building was considered and consultation with the airport authorities was undertaken to determine an acceptable height from an aviation safeguarding perspective. The local 'street scape' was carefully assessed to determine the appropriateness of building height on the perimeter. Consideration was also given to future development on neighbouring sites to factor in the impact on how these might affect this new development.
Four different early massing designs were prepared prior to further engagement with SCC.
